Today we did our Lesson 5 SAT exercises quiz and turned our actual exercises. Make sure to keep your Othello book and be prepared to bring it to class when we finish Long Way Gone. Ms. Smith also handed out A Long Way Gone to those who didn't bring their own. We also took notes on Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. We are also splitting into groups for the debates today. Ethos:
  • Every time you see celebrity being spokesperson
  • He is saying “I endorse this product”
  • Payton Manning saying that I should eat at Papa John’s
  • Lebron James says I should eat at McDonald’s
  • Visual media has benefit of using celebrity to endorse product
  • Subway commercials with all kinds of athletes
  • Soccer players sponsor Pepsi/Andika during World Cup
  • They have new stuff and I need new stuff
Pathos:
  • Emotional advertisement
  • Rescue puppies, feed kids in Africa
  • Create feelings of confidence and intrigue
  • To reinforce value
  • Promote sense of urgency
  • The emotions to which the message appeals may be many and varied; safety, well-being, pride, anger, insecurity, desire
  • Budweiser
  • Extra Commercial
  • Mayhem Allstate Commercial
  • Army/Navy/Marines/Air Force commercials
Logos:
  • Logos is a logical appeal typically marked by facts, figures, and data. This information is quantifiable and helps us rationalize our decisions through hard data on money saved, time saved, higher status, and so on.
